The community of Papakolea joined together to enter the 100th Anniversary Kamehameha Day Parade. Under the visionary leadership of Faith Kalemau, Cappy Solatorio, Lilia Kapunia, Kalehau Kamauu, Lionel Wright, and Peter Terry, the commmunity created an amazing float to represent this Hawaiian Homestead sharing the cultural practices of hula, lei making, ku’i kalo, and net throwing. The float musicians’ were Papakolea’s own Sam Kaina, and Mahiehie with Daniel Nihipali, Gabriel Kapili Littlejohn and two of Uncle George Holokai’s haumana were featured dancers. Papakolea’s kupuna, makua, and kekei were on the float and walking proudly along side the Papakolea Community Association banner. The legacy of float making for Papakolea lives on. A big MAHALO goes out to all who participated with labors of love, flower, greenery and food donations. IMUA Papakolea.
